On the summit of Mt. Everest in 1994 after a day-
long climb, Kiwi guide Mark Whetu and client
Mike Rheinberger celebrate having reached their
goal.

But the two exhausted climbers realise it's too
late to return to camp before nightfall. They
know their decision to bivouac at 28,800 feet
could be fatal. Following a freezing night just 50
meters below the summit, they try to descend
however Rheinberger is stricken with a cerebral
oedema.

After struggling all day, Whetu must decide
whether to leave his friend on the mountain and
save his own life or remain with his Rheinberger
forever.

Mark returns home to Queenstown to recover
from his injuries. As a result of the night at
28,800 feet, he loses his toes to frostbite and
enters a period of deep depression.

Mark endures a long recovery and much
emotional turmoil before deciding to return to the
Himalaya as leader of an expedition attempting to
summit the worlds sixth highest mountain, Cho
Oyu - (8201m). The expedition is a success.

The film received more than 10 different festival
awards.
